I Love Giant Squid
A student just told me about a book she's reading and it reminded me of a book I read about two years ago and that I think you should read. The Highest Tide by Jim Lynch.

It's magical realism-y. The USRDA for Magical Realism is not being met by the average American. Symptoms include concrete, absolutist thinking and wearing mom jeans.
It's beautifully written.
It makes you want to be near the sea, and that's always good.
Protagonist is lovingly manifested.
Best reason of all: it features giant squid.

This is just the kind of book review that'll actually spur me into action. Thanks for the suggestion!

Near the story arc, is there a giant calamari feast that occurs? Because that's the only way I want to deal with giant squid...Ok, ok, you've got me intrigued. And I looked on my multivitamin, and there is no Magical Realism included whatsoever. Huh.
