Do Some Good
I spend a disproportionate amount of my time with 15 year olds. Much of the time, they are entertaining buckets of hormones in trendy clothes. They are smart, funny, and quick. Sometimes, however, I get depressed by how little they actually seem to understand about "the real world." They live, despite their parents often well-intentioned and well-funded efforts, really sheltered lives.
I am increasingly freaked out about poverty. It doesn't seem to me that many Americans, except, obviously, for the rapidly growing numbers of people who are experiencing it firsthand, actually know how many people live in poverty...or even what poverty is. How to help is a question with such complicated answers that I cannot begin to parse it all out.
I'll try to help educate some teenagers. Maybe you could help educate your friends and neighbors? Some places to start are One and Kiva.org.
